Notification to report for USCG/DOT random drug test

The USCG’s June 29, 2016 issue of Marine Safety Advisory states that when an employee is selected for a random drug test, he/she must be notified in writing: “Notification to the mariner must be done discreetly and in writing…” The applicable USCG Regulations, 46 CFR Part 16, and the Marine Employers Drug Testing Guidance do not specify that notification of random testing be made in writing to the employee. However, we do recommend compliance with the recent Marine Safety Advisory. Therefore, to assist you with the new directive, a template to notify your employees of their selection for random drug testing is provided here.
